Program description
The programme supports Ukrainian studies projects implemented by research institutions, educational organisations, cultural institutions, and analytical centres located outside Ukraine. Applications are currently open for the second 2026 call.
The programme’s main objective is to generate evidence-based knowledge about Ukraine and strengthen analytical approaches to understanding the country’s past and present. It also promotes innovative approaches to Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar studies and their integration into the international academic landscape.
Key focus areas include:
- development of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar studies;
- promotion of academic exchange and collaboration;
- integration of knowledge on Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar language, literature, history, political science, sociology, and related disciplines into university curricula;
- strengthening the presence of Ukrainian studies in international academic discourse;
- support for publications related to Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar studies.
In the long term, the programme aims to expand international academic cooperation and increase global awareness and understanding of Ukraine.
Main Information
Eligibility
The grant programme is open to foreign universities, educational and cultural institutions, think tanks, and independent researchers.
Preference will be given to:
- projects with co-financing of up to 30%;
- initiatives that include partnerships with Ukrainian counterparts.
The programme also includes participation restrictions. The Ukrainian Institute does not provide funding or cooperate with projects whose ultimate beneficiaries are citizens of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Belarus, or individuals and entities associated with aggressor states or sanctioned parties.
Applicants must ensure that no direct or indirect benefit is provided to such persons or organisations. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in rejection of funding or termination of the grant agreement.
Financing
The programme provides funding for Ukrainian studies projects implemented by research institutions, educational organisations, cultural institutions, and analytical centres abroad.
- The maximum grant amount is up to USD 15,000 per project.
- Participation in the competition is free of charge and does not require any registration fee.
- The final funding amount depends on the approved project budget and available programme resources.
Eligible budget items may include:
- translation of materials into and from Ukrainian and foreign languages;
- preparation of academic, analytical, and public-interest publications;
- communication and outreach activities;
- book and brochure layout and design;
- editing and proofreading services;
- interpretation services;
- printing and international distribution of materials;
- organisation of conferences, roundtables, and public lectures;
- fees for invited lecturers;
- production of audiovisual and multimedia materials;
- software development, supply, and testing.
Ineligible expenses include honoraria, bonuses, author royalties, licensing fees, costs related to preparing the competition application, profit-generating expenses, accreditation and membership fees, as well as goods or services already financed through other sources before or after the grant agreement is signed.
Supported Activities
The grant programme supports projects that advance Ukrainian studies, international academic cooperation, and broader knowledge about Ukraine.
Eligible activities include:
- development of university courses, including online courses (MOOCs), with a priority on undergraduate education;
- organisation of research visits and summer schools focused on Ukraine;
- international and interdisciplinary conferences related to Ukrainian studies;
- research projects and publications aligned with the programme’s priority themes;
- translation of specialised academic literature and archival materials from Ukrainian into other languages.
Priority thematic areas for 2026 include:
- decolonial and post-imperial Ukrainian studies;
- research on contemporary Ukraine since 1991;
- studies of the experience of war in Ukraine from historical and socio-cultural perspectives;
- interdisciplinary Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar studies;
- research in the field of digital humanities.
The programme particularly encourages initiatives that strengthen international engagement with Ukrainian studies and expand their presence in global academic discourse.
Roadmap
The second call of the Ukrainian Studies Support Programme includes the following key stages:
- Applications are accepted until 22 July 2026 (inclusive).
- The submission deadline is based on the UTC+3 time zone.
- After the application period closes, submitted proposals will proceed to the review and evaluation stage.
- The competition results are expected to be announced at the end of August 2026.
Applicants are encouraged to take time zone differences into account when preparing and submitting their applications.
How to Apply
1. Review the programme regulations and requirements.
2. Complete the application form in English.
3. Prepare the budget form in USD.
4. Attach all required documents and supporting materials.
5. Submit the complete application package through the application system designated by the Ukrainian Institute before the deadline.
6. Await eligibility review and expert assessment results.
Evaluation Criteria
After passing the technical compliance review, applications are submitted to the competition committee for content-based evaluation. The maximum possible score is 13 points.
Applications are assessed according to the following components:
- Relevance of the project topic — up to 3 points.
- Feasibility and justification of project activities — up to 4 points.
- Consistency of the budget with project objectives — up to 3 points.
- Availability of resources and relevant experience — up to 3 points.
The evaluation considers the novelty and significance of the topic, its contribution to Ukrainian studies, the logical connection between project goals and activities, the expected impact on target audiences, and the quality of communication and outreach plans.
Reviewers also assess the reasonableness of the budget, the adequacy of available resources, and the applicant’s experience in implementing similar projects.
The scoring scale is based on the number of criteria met:
- 4 points — four criteria met;
- 3 points — three criteria met;
- 2 points — two criteria met;
- 1 point — one criterion met;
- 0 points — no criteria met.
The final score is calculated as the average of the scores assigned by the competition committee members. Final decisions are made by the committee, which also reserves the right not to select a winner if no proposal sufficiently meets the competition requirements.

Reporting and Compliance
Legal Terms
Participation in the competition constitutes acceptance of the programme regulations. Submitted materials must comply with legal and programme requirements. The Ukrainian Institute may reject applications that fail to meet requirements or contain false information. Relations with selected grantees are governed by a grant agreement.
