Program description
The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI) offers numerous scholarships to support participation in the Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute (HUSI) and enrollment in HUSI courses through the Harvard Summer School (HSS).
A limited number of full scholarships are awarded each year, covering tuition, room, and board on campus. To receive a full scholarship, students must register for 8 credits of HUSI courses.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement, academic or professional contribution to Ukrainian studies, and financial need.
Main Information
Eligibility
The HUSI program attracts undergraduate and graduate students, postgraduates, and working professionals from various countries. To participate in HSS courses (including HUSI courses), the following is required:
- proof of English language proficiency for non-native speakers (provision of relevant transcripts or test results in accordance with English language proficiency requirements);
- for certain courses - a Critical Reading and Writing Skills (CRWS) test, a mathematics proficiency exam, or an economics proficiency test;
- full-time students, students living on campus, and international students studying on a visa are required to provide proof of mandatory vaccinations in accordance with established rules.
For international students who come to campus and study full-time, obtaining a US immigration document, Form I-20, from HSS and an F-1 student visa in accordance with the instructions.
All HSS requirements must be met in order to register and be eligible for scholarship support.
Financing
Scholarship funds are paid directly to HSS, not to the student.
Supported Activities
- Study Ukrainian language, history, literature, and culture through academic courses.
- Participate in a weekly series of events organized by HURI.
- Use HSS resources, including the library collection.
- HSS supports a variety of participation formats and technology and equipment requirements, allowing students to study both on campus and remotely.
Roadmap
All application materials must be submitted directly through the CARAT platform, with the exception of the HUSI registration form.
Harvard participants can log in to CARAT using their HarvardKey. Non-Harvard participants must first create a HarvardKey to access the system.
An application will only be considered complete once the organizers have received all the necessary materials. One letter of recommendation may be submitted later, within one week of the main application deadline.
Selection results will be announced in early May.

Application Essay / Personal Statement (up to 750 words):
You must provide a description of your academic research or field of specialization (academic or professional), focusing on activities related to Ukraine. You must also explain how the planned coursework will contribute to your academic, professional, and personal goals. In addition, include a brief justification of your financial need. If you have applied for other sources of funding, including the FLAS summer fellowship, please indicate this in your statement.
CV / Resume (up to 3 pages):
You must submit information about your academic and professional background, including previously obtained degrees and current academic programs, field of study, and relevant dates.
Academic Transcripts:
A digital unofficial copy issued to students is sufficient. You must provide a transcript for your most recently completed degree or your current academic program. The selection committee will review no more than two transcripts in total.
One Letter of Recommendation from a university instructor (or an employer if you have not studied recently), which must be uploaded directly to CARAT by the recommender. The submission deadline is one week after the application deadline.
Within the CARAT platform, applicants will be asked to provide the name and email address of one recommender who has agreed to submit a recommendation letter in support of the application. CARAT will automatically send the recommender an email with a link for uploading the letter. Please provide a corporate or institutional email address and, if possible, request that the letter be submitted on official institutional letterhead with a signature.
You may save your application and return to it later. The applicant is responsible for contacting the recommender in advance and ensuring that the recommendation letter is submitted on time.
Evaluation Criteria
For the HUSI scholarship, the main categories for evaluating applications are:
- academic potential;
- financial need.
Required Documents
To confirm eligibility for participation in HSS courses (general requirements):

Documents confirming English language proficiency (transcripts or test results) for non-native English speakers, in accordance with the programme requirements.

Immunization documentation for full-time students, residential students, and international students, in accordance with the vaccination requirement policy.
Updates / Announcements
Students who receive and accept funding under the HURI scholarship must:
- enroll in one or more HUSI courses at Harvard Summer School, which will be taken for academic credit and formal assessment;
- attend all HUSI events (exceptions will be considered upon request);
prepare and publish at least one post for the HUSI blog.
