Program description

The Pulitzer Center's Global Grants for Journalism are designed to support in-depth, substantive, and high-quality journalism that covers critically important topics that are often underreported or overlooked in the media. The program is a “catch-all” format, meaning there are no restrictions on subject matter or geography—journalists can propose projects from any country in the world and on any topic, provided that the reporting is socially significant, thoroughly researched, and has strong potential for impact.

The Pulitzer Center reviews applications on an ongoing basis, with no deadline. The organization seeks to support reporting that reveals new, underreported aspects of global processes and promotes a deeper understanding of important social issues around the world. It is one of the most flexible and accessible grant programs for journalists, allowing them to pursue ambitious reporting projects regardless of subject matter or location.

Eligibility

The grant is open to reporters, photographers, radio/audio journalists, television/video journalists, and documentary filmmakers. The organizer aims to support journalists of diverse backgrounds and nationalities.

Applications are welcome from both freelancers and staff journalists of any nationality, as well as teams or newsroom groups (provided that all required information about participants is submitted). Projects involving work in conflict zones or other high-risk environments require a confirmed assignment from an editorial entity that assumes responsibility for the journalist’s safety, as well as strict adherence to ACOS Alliance principles.

Financing

  • covering the costs of producing a specific piece or series of pieces, including travel, purchase of necessary data, and temporary engagement of individuals with specific skills;

  • payment for equipment rental and contractor services (e.g., data researchers, illustrators, visualization designers, local partners), when necessary;

  • in exceptional cases — stipends to cover the time of a freelance reporter, if justified in the budget.

Supported Activities

- preparation of printed, photo, audio, and video materials; multimedia projects;

- creative forms of dissemination and audience engagement, including radio broadcasts, posters, comics, poetry readings, and other formats.

How to Apply

  • Complete the online form available on the Pulitzer Center website;

  • Provide the project title and a short description, and if applying on behalf of an organization/newsroom, indicate this in the description; if needed, attach a more detailed plan in the “Additional Materials” section;

  • Attach letters of interest/commitment from editors and include a description of the distribution plan;

  • Submit a budget, specifying whether the Pulitzer Center will be the sole donor, and provide information on existing or potential funding partners;

  • Indicate the reporting location (country/city, locality) and the approximate dates of implementation;

  • All fields are mandatory except those specifically marked; file size must not exceed 5 MB;

  • If the project requires urgent review to ensure timeliness, this must be explained in the description and the relevant box in the application form must be checked.

Required Documents

  • a detailed distribution plan and letters of interest or commitment from media outlets that will publish the work;

  • a budget with justification of expenses;

  • if other funding is available — information on the costs already covered and the need for additional support;

  • for projects in conflict zones — confirmation from editors assuming responsibility for the journalist’s safety.
